This collection of articles is the result of an interdisciplinary Medieval Studies conference held at the University of Sheffield in 2009. Brutality and aggression were a stark reality of everyday life in the Middle Ages; from individual rebellions through family feuds to epic wars, a history of medieval warfare could easily be read as a history of medieval violence. This volume goes beyond such an analysis by illustrating just how pervasive the nature of war could be, influencing not only medieval historiography and chronicle tradition, but also other disciplines such as art, architecture, literature and law. The overarching and multi-faceted themes bring together both iconic aspects of medieval warfare such as armour and the Crusades, as well as taking in the richness of textual traditions and matters of crucial importance at the time—the justification for war and the means by which peace can be re-established.

Aggressive and Violent Peasant Elites in the Nordic Countries, C. 1500-1700
This book investigates the forms that the aggression and violence of peasant elites could take in early modern Fennoscandia, and their role within society. The contributors highlight the social stratification, inner divisions, contradictions and conflicts of the peasant communities, but also pay attention to the elite as leaders of resistance against the authorities. With the formation of more centralised states, the elites’ status and room for agency diminished, but regional and temporal variations were great in this relatively drawn-out process, and there still remained several favourable contexts for their agency. Even though the peasant elite was not a homogenous entity, the chapters in this collection present us one uniting feature – the peasant elites’ tendency to assert themselves with an active and aggressive agency, even if this led to very different outcomes.

El lector hi trobarà la descripció de cadascuna d’aquestes varietats, precedida d’un text introductori en el qual se situen els orígens de la vinya silvestre i la vinya cultivada, s’aprofundeix en el concepte de varietat i es presenta l’ampelografia com la ciència (o art) que estudia la caracterització de cada varietat. Tot seguit, s’ofereix un resum de la història de la vinya i el vi a Catalunya, que esperem que ajudi a contextualitzar les històries particulars que el segueixen i que corresponen al gruix d’aquesta publicació.

Las instituciones públicas de asistencia han tenido y continúan teniendo, desde la Edad Media, un rol fundamental y activo en la configuración del espacio urbano, social, cultural, económico y político, puesto que son piezas clave para la reproducción de la propia idea de «comunidad» o de «ciudad». Por este motivo, su estudio histórico se ha convertido en un observatorio privilegiado, por la propia naturaleza de estos establecimientos, para capturar realidades imposibles de entrever desde otros escenarios de la ciudad. Este libro nace a partir de la celebración del V Simposio Internacional «Els Abrils de l'Hospital», cuyo leitmotiv fue «Historia y Etnografía Hospitalarias».
